Weekend Update 7/8

So I finally got my manuscript out to Betas, Thanks peeps!  How was everyone's 4th?  Here is a pic of me out grilling before my party.

This weekend is my 7th anniversary.  That is a long time for anyone to tolerate me.  We are going to see Ben Folds tonight, then stay downtown tomorrow and do some bar hopping, then to some Blue Agave place she's really wanted to go to for dinner.

A quick writing inquiry.  How much of an outline/draft do you do for a sequel?  I have an idea and title, but don't really want to write it unless I could get the first one going.  At my conference a couple months back an author said she had a skeleton outline of her sequel in case something changed in revision.  What does your outlining process look like?

I'll leave you with a couple Ben Folds Songs for your weekend:

  3. Happy Anniversity to y'all. I never outline anything that I'm planning to write. I just jump in and hope the sparks fly.

  4. Happy Anniversary, Chris! Love that pipe and red maple leaf... and Ben Folds. Enjoy your celebratory weekend. (I rarely outline, except for in my head.) ;)

  5. Good stuff! The outline for my second book was fairly detailed, but I'd already signed for the first one when I created it. (And before that, I had no idea I was writing a second book!)
Have a great anniversary. I sometimes wonder how my wife has tolerated me for so long as well.

  7. Happy Anniversary, Dude. And I keep skeletons in my closet. Er, that is, skeleton outlines. Yeah, that's it.

  8. I love the Canada shirt - what better way to celebrate the 4th? :) Happy anniversary! I haven't exactly written a sequel nor planned to, so I wouldn't be much help.

  10. Happy Anniversary! I hope you guys had a wonderful time. :) Congratulations on getting your ms to your beta readers, too. I have several stories written with the same mc, but they aren't novels, they are beginning chapter books. Sorry I can't help you on your query. I have heard agents and editors like to know you have a plan for a series or sequel in your query letter.

  11. Happy Anniversary!! Hope you had a wonderful time.

Alas, I am no help in the outline department as I am a pantser. I try to do a basic outline but it all falls apart as I write.

Congrats on getting your book out to the beta readers. Yay!!

  12. Happy Anniversary!
I usually have an idea about sequels while I'm writing #1 but I've never actually written one. Maybe this time I will.

  13. As much as I want to, I'm not touching my sequel until the first book is contracted for publishing. Too much can change in the edits and revisions and the nature of my story means that the smallest changes can carry all the way through to the very end.

So it makes a lot more sense to have one book cemented before I can start with the other. :-)

  14. So happy way-late anniversary! 7 years is fabulous.

As for sequels . . . for mine, I just have the thing basically plotted out, a possible first chapter written, but that's as far as I'll go unless I manage to sell the first one.

    Best of luck with yours!
